The Challenge

The digital landscape is growing increasingly confusing, and right-wing voices are dominating. Most people have very little understanding of the forces that shape these digital systems. While completing my Socio-Design literacy research in my final year of university, I realised these issues were deeply tied to my political views, and the lasting effects of neoliberalism. I started IRRATIONAL TECHNOLOGY to spread critical design awareness, and awareness of the other social and political forces shaping technology, on the political left.

The Solution

IRRATIONAL TECHNOLOGY has created a growing audience of learners, educators, and organisers returning to and re-using public resources:

  • Writing and publishing essays that break down design choices, algorithmic systems, and their everyday effects.

  • Creating public-facing explainers, video guides, and annotated resources that show how persuasive design works in practice.

  • Collaborating with educators, technologists, and critical creators to keep resources relevant and reflective of real-world challenges.

  • Prioritising accessibility, context, and depth. Resources are made for saving, revisiting, and using, not just passing or scrolling past.

Next Steps

With an average of 11k monthly viewers, and growing recognition from high-profile organisations and well-respected, and proven follow through promoting ethical platform alternatives, IRRATIONAL TECHNOLOGY is making a difference. But there is a growing issue. Online education is collapsing. Users feel informed, but rarely move toward action or real critique. IRRATIONAL TECHNOLOGY’s next steps are focused on breaking this cycle and rebuilding meaningful impact. IRRATIONAL TECHNOLOGY will:

  • Build and refine tools that track real learning and sustained critical engagement after viewers interact with educational content.

  • Map and publish the weak links in current online activism and education, so creators and communities can address them directly.

  • Challenge algorithm-driven habits; create space for sustained, critical reflection rather than surface-level response.
